Do you like figuring out the odds of sports championships? Are you detail oriented? You might be a great Mortgage Underwriter.

In this job you’ll judge the risk of a mortgage application from the financial institution’s perspective. Your main duties will be to evaluate mortgage applications, determine total mortgage amount, and create risk analysis reports. When you get a new loan application, you’ll look at the total household income, down payment amount, and purchase price of the property. All of these things will help you to decide how much money your company will loan to the potential customer. And you’ll create risk analysis reports to continually evaluate the risks to your company.  

To get this job, you’ll need a high school diploma or equivalent and several years experience working with loans and financial transactions. A Bachelor’s degree will help your application stand out.



Key Responsibilities

  • Ability to perform quality work while maintaining productivity and compliance standards
  • Use negotiation and communication skills with teammates, sales partners and customers
  • Maintain knowledge of government guidelines and federal lending regulations
  • Assess an individual's creditworthiness while following regulatory and compliance requirements
  • Make credit recommendations based on company-defined acceptable levels of risk
  • Work in a fast-paced environment while practicing sound lending judgment.
  • Maintain strong attention to detail
